The slopes and trails are powdered with skiers.
Early March was consumed by Alpine and Nordic state ski championships. It began at Sugarbush with the men’s downhill events. Rutland claimed first place with CVU coming in fourth. Cody Putre and Dan Caffry led the Redhawks with fourth and seventh place individual finishes in the giant slalom. The Alpine women’s team was third at the Middlebury College Snow Bowl. Taylor Spillane was the highest Redhawk finisher. She placed third in the two-run slalom. Rice’s Katie Cutting won both the slalom and giant slalom.

Nordics carry a Charlotte flavor.
Charlotte was well represented on the women’s Nordic side with Kylie deGroot and Sienna Searles racing for the Redhawks. Kylie’s ninth place followed by Sienna’s tenth spot ensured CVU second place overall. Sienna and Kylie were also part of second-place relay teams in classical and skating events.
As a sophomore, Sienna won a spot on two elite ski teams, the J2 that carries the top twenty 14- and 15-year-old Nordic skiers and the Vermont Eastern Team, which selects 24 high school skiers. She will represent her state at the Gunstock Nordic Center in New Hampshire later this month.

Redhawk hockey makes it to state finals.
Hoping to repeat last year’s Division I state championship feat, CVU men’s hockey wasted no time in setting a tough tone against North Country in this year’s semi-finals. The Redhawks scored three goals in a minute and 18 seconds of the first period to build a lead that the Falcons could not overcome. The final 4-2 victory sent CVU into the final game against Spaulding at UVM’s Gutterson Arena.
Full stands on both sides of the rink greeted the players at the championship. Spaulding’s maroon shirts and helmets stood against CVU’s red shirts – or lack thereof. Teacher Chris Hood was curious as to whether any had brought their homework to the game.
CVU started quickly with Nate Lacroix chipping in a rebound of Robbie Dobrowski’s shot in the first 27 seconds. Spaulding tied matters while holding a two-man advantage later in the period. The tie held through another 20 minutes until a Spaulding shot slipped between goalie Ben Albertson’s pads. A third Crimson Tide goal following a faceoff in the CVU zone provided the margin of victory, while an empty-net tally was merely frosting on the cake.

Men’s basketball is stopped by Essex.
It was quarterfinal night on the opposing team’s court, and CVU ran into a hot hand from the Hornet’s sixth man. Essex moved on to the state semi-finals with a 60-46 win over the Redhawks. As has often been the case this season, CVU scoring came from Jake Donnelly, 12 points, and Charlotte’s Will Hurd, 9 points. The Redhawks reached the quarterfinal match via a nine-point win over Spaulding with Donnelly again leading the way with 14 points and nine assists.

Eight wrestlers headed to Vergennes for state finals.
CVU sent eight wrestlers, including two freshmen, to the state championships held at Mount Abraham High School on February 26. By Saturday afternoon, only one Redhawk remained on the mat, sophomore Sam Fortin at 171 pounds. Fortin won a consolation victory over Spaulding’s Taylor Dorsett, an opponent to whom Sam had lost four times over the year. Fortin placed third in his weight class and finished the season with 33 wins and only 8 losses. As a team, CVU finished 17th in a state tournament won by Mt. Anthony High School for the 22nd time in a row. CVU grapplers finished with a 7-6 team record over the regular season.

KK Logan named to Harris Conference all-stars.
Senior women’s hockey forward, KK Logan, has been named as the lone CVU skater to play in the Rotary-Key Bank All-Star classic to be held at the Essex Skating Facility later this spring.
