Men’s basketball opens the month with two road wins.
Colchester was the first to succumb to CVU’s male hoopsters. Jake Donnelly led the Redhawks with 17 points as they built an eight-point halftime lead into a 33-point win, 61-28. The following Friday, Charlotte’s Will Hurd led the way to revenge an earlier Essex victory, scoring 21 points as the Redhawks clipped the Hornets 58-54. Donnelly added 15 points and Robert Russ 13.
Women’s basketball goes 2 and 2 since late January.
Late last month former Charlotte resident Brittany Pfaff led Rice Memorial to a 47-39 win over CVU in a game that saw only a one-point difference at halftime. Allison Gannon’s 13 points were high for the Redhawks. Gannon’s offense coupled with Shae Hulbert’s shot blocking and rebounding carried CVU past Spaulding 40-35 later that week. The Redhawks opened February splitting games with Burlington, a 51-42 loss, before beating St. Johnsbury 47-41. The Seahorses covered Redhawk scorer Gannon particularly well, which may have paved the road to victory. Against St. Jay, Shae Hulbert’s 13 points in the fourth quarter carried CVU upward.
BFA relays and Essex Carnival feature CVU skiers.
Both Nordic teams captured the top spots in last week’s BFA relays. Men’s and women’s teams featured Charlotte racers. Kylie deGroot and her partner Abby Stoner finished in second place, while Jake Marston and his partner Sam Epstein duplicated that for the men. Tabor deGroot and Andrew Childs came in fourth. On the Alpine track at the Essex Carnival, the combined team scores saw CVU on top of 10 other high schools. Taylor Spillane won the girls’ giant slalom and Cody Putre finished second among the boys.
Ryan Fleming moves up through the wrestling ranks.
Beginning with an exhibition win on points against St. Johnsbury, Ryan Fleming topped it by pinning his Randolph opponent at 160 pounds. The Redhawks split the home meet, beating Randolph 54-18 but losing to Colchester 35-30. In the early February Colchester Invitational that brought in teams from New York and New Hampshire, CVU’s Sam Fortin took second place at 171 pounds.
Both hockey teams start February on winning notes.
The Redhawk women skaters picked up in February where they left off in January, on a winning note. However, it took Molly Howard’s goal in overtime to give the Redhawks a 5-4 victory over an always tough Essex squad. The Hornets led by two goals with little over five minutes left in regulation before CVU captured two quick tallies, forcing the game into overtime. Charlotte goalie Nicole Sisk stopped 19 shots. In the prior game against Missisquois, Howard also hit the game winner, this time with five minutes left on the regulation clock. The women have upped their record to 14 wins, three losses and a tie.
CVU men began the month with a convincing 9-1 victory over Rice. Kyle Logan’s hat trick and Robbie Dobrowski’s twin tallies paved the way. Two days later the team traveled to Rutland where Dobrowski sank two third-period goals to guarantee a 4-1 win over the Rutland Raiders. Logan and Nate Lacroix each added a goal and an assist.
