deGroots add brother-sister dimension to CVU Nordic teams.
Kylie deGroot and her brother Tabor have been skiing well for the Redhawk Nordic ski teams. In a recent race in Jericho, Kylie’s third-place finish helped the women win the 11-team meet. Her teammate Abbie Stoner finished just ahead of Kylie, and Johanna Fehrs and Sierra Frisbee helped CVU cluster four racers in the top ten.
Against Colchester and Burlington, Tabor joined fellow Charlotter Jake Marston to propel the Redhawks to a second-place finish, just behind the Seahorses. On the women’s side the CVU trio of Fehrs, deGroot and Frisbie finished first, second and third. All in all the Redhawks’ top eight racers left room for only two from other schools to cross the finish among the top ten. It seemed a blur of red at the tape.
On the Alpine side, Charlotte’s Lucy Halvorson has maintained a downhill edge. At Sugarbush in a two-run slalom, she placed 9th, joining her teammates Taylor Spillane and Abby Owens among the top finishers.
Women’s hockey hits ten wins.
With Charlotte’s Nicole Sisk maintaining a solid presence in goal and the scoring being spread among many, the Redhawks are a team that cannot be defeated by covering one strong player. The latest win over Burr and Burton shows an excellent example of the team quality. KK Logan and Hannah Johnson each had two goals with Molly Howard adding a goal and four assists. Amanda Armell, Alyx Rivard and Sasha Gunther scored as well with Sisk called upon for 14 saves.
Essex gains revenge in men’s hockey.
Physically intimidating, skating stronger and making shots count, the Essex Hornets paid back the Redhawks for an earlier loss with a 4-0 shutout. CVU acted a bit tentative as Essex closed the second period with two goals in a span of two minutes, and a couple of pucks seemed to creep past goalie Mark Albertson. The loss came on the heels of a 4-4 tie with Burlington, a game in which the Redhawks overcame a three-goal deficit in the third period. Robbie Dobrowski led the scoring with two goals, and Kyle Logan assisted on all four.
Women’s basketball wins an even dozen.
A scoring run in the third quarter of last Friday’s game against North Country made way for the Redhawk’s 50–30 win, the team’s 12th of the season. In the three prior victories, Allison Gannon’s scoring touch was as keen as her stained glass artwork on display in the school, as she hit over 20 points per game. She marked a high of 31 against Vergennes.
Men’s basketball goes one up and one down.
With senior Jake Donnelly hitting 16 of his game-high 21 points in the second half – including three three-pointers in the third quarter – CVU men hoopsters defeated South Burlington 67-61. They returned three days later to their home floor, only to lose a squeaker to Rice 51-49. Rice’s Chris McCormick hit a layup with 10 seconds left for the win. Donnelly again topped Redhawk scorers with 15 points.
Gymnasts continue to perform artfully.
With seven women placing among the top three in four events and the All-around category, CVU gymnasts defeated U-32 by a score of 125.55 to 112.15 at a meet held in Berlin. Ashley Bachand won vault and Madison Bourdeau the floor exercises with Megan Kloekner taking third place All-around. That win followed a home victory over St. Johnsbury Academy and Middlebury in which Bachand collected four titles in Vault, Bars, Floor and All-around.
Redhawk wrestlers split a tri-meet.
The CVU wrestling team hosted Milton and Middlebury in the middle of January. The Redhawks went 1-1 on the night, dropping their opener to Middlebury, then coming back with a 39-18 win over Milton. It brought the season record to an even 3-3. The highlight of the match was Williston senior James Datillio’s pin of his Middlebury opponent in 13 seconds – the year’s fastest. Five Redhawks then entered the Michael J. Baker Tournament in Essex against a field of nearly 30 teams from around New England. Captains Ryan Stearns and Sam Fortin placed in their respective weight classes, Stearns 6th at 135 pounds and Fortin 4th at 171 pounds.
