Concert Proposed to Fund a Community Recreation Center
Concert Proposed to Fund a Community Recreation Center
by Nancy Wood,
November 3, 2011, page 11.....

Seth Zimmerman approached the Selectboard on October 24 with a proposal for a concert in the fall of 2012 to raise money for a Charlotte community recreation center, possibly with a swimming pool. Using his connections in the concert industry, he hopes to attract bands that will draw a large audience. He suggested there could be 10,000 to 20,000 people.

Part of Zimmerman’s motivation was the imposition of fees by CCS for the use of the school by community groups. Zimmerman is the scoutmaster for Boy Scout Troop 615 that has held its pancake breakfast at the school for a number of years. He is exploring using the Masonic Lodge as an alternative. Zimmerman said, “CCS isn’t a community center anymore.”

The location of the recreation center would be up to the Selectboard and the Town. In the past, the Flea Market site has been suggested for such a use. Zimmerman said it would be self-sustaining, funded with fees for nonresidents and a food concession.
Peter Demick has offered the use of his 66-acre field on East Thompson’s Point Road (see photo on page 1) for the concert. He said, “Hard to believe that the school charges for people to use it. Didn’t we
already pay for that through our taxes?”

School Board Chair Lynne Jaunich said, “The board is looking at the fee policy, which always has been there but never used before.”
