Charlotte Senior Center Happenings
Charlotte Senior Center Happenings
by Mary Recchia, Activities Coordinator

Please look for the Senior Center Winter Program of activities as an insert in this issue of The Charlotte News. The center will be closed for the Thanksgiving holiday on November 26 and 27.
The eighth annual Charlotte Artisans Sale will take place Saturday, November 21, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Charlotte Senior Center. Twenty-five local artisans will sell their handmade wonders in this intimate setting. Selections include knitted hats, ceramics, jewelry, sculptures, ornaments and clothing. Light homemade refreshments will be available on site. Buy local and support the Senior Center!
Join Harriett and Joan for Holiday Cookie Making on Tuesday morning, December 1, from 9 a.m. to noon. Antique, collectable cookie cutters will be the inspiration for our festive cookie making! Harriett and Joan invite you to help create the old-fashioned sights and smells of years gone by while baking cookies for the tree trimming party to be held after the luncheon on December 2. The cookie cutters will be on display alongside the edibles. Registration required. No fee.
The Flynn Matinee series continues with an offering of “Play Me a Story!” Stories, Culture, & Classical Music from the VSO on Thursday, December 3, at 9:30 a.m. Narrated by Willem Lange-New England’s premier storyteller, this lively program explores the enduring cultural and literary ingredients of fables, myths and tales from around the world. The symphony illustrates the marvelous enhancement of stories through music with Prokofiev’s classic Peter and the Wolf and Bizet’s colorful opera Carmen. The program ends with inspiration and creativity as an original student composition brings a fractured fairy tale to life! This is a wonderful opportunity to see a Flynn show during the day at a fraction of the regular cost. Registration is through the Senior Center and is required one week prior to the show. Fee: $8.
Nick Monsarrat and Anne Galloway will present a workshop on New Media and Citizen Journalism Friday morning from 10 to 11:30 a.m. on December 4. Come hear two former long-time Vermont newspaper editors discuss the changing nature of the news industry in Vermont and detail the role of citizen journalists in this new era of Internet-based news gathering and commentary. As newspapers everywhere lose staff to difficult financial times, and more news inevitably goes uncovered, current and former journalists around the country are now exploring exciting ways to involve trained citizen journalists in community-based aspects of newsgathering via non-profit news organizations. Hear how citizens themselves are now starting to play important new roles in helping shape the content and focus of news content over Internet news sites. Registration required. No fee.
Senior Luncheons are held every Wednesday at noon. Reservations are necessary in advance and can be made by calling the Senior Center at 425-6345. A $4 donation is requested.
Those who do not wish to share lunch with us are welcome to drop in around 1 p.m. to enjoy the After Lunch Offerings:
12/2: Annual Tree Decorating
The smell of balsam, seasonal desserts and songs in the air will be the backdrop for you to catch some holiday spirit. All hands will be needed to steady the ladders and help fill the large tree with our hand made ornaments. The luncheon dessert and coffee will be served in the Great Room.
12/9: CVU Madrigal Singers
The Madrigals return to share the fruits of this fall’s work together. The 14 singers have been rehearsing since September and bring a repertoire filled with the joys of the season. They welcome the opportunity to be among friends, sharing the gift of song.
