Charlotte Senior Center Happenings
by Mary Recchia, Activities Coordinator
Please mark your calendars for The Charlotte Senior Center Annual Meeting on October 20 at 6:30 p.m. After a brief meeting and light refreshments we will hear about Senior Issues from Philip Fiermont, Outreach Director from Senator Bernard Sanders office.
We will be holding a Volunteer Host Training, Update and Review session on Thursday, October 29, at 9:30 a.m. and again at 1:30 p.m. Hosts open and close the building, get the coffee going, greet guests and answer the phone. We hope you will consider joining the many volunteers who help to make the Senior Center a vibrant part of the community.
The center is pleased to host the American Red Cross Blood Drive on Thursday, October 22, from 2 to 7 p.m. The comfortable atmosphere and great snacks make giving the “Gift of Life” at this site most pleasurable.
Fall Hikes in the Champlain Valley with Marty Morrissey continues, and a full description of each trip is available at the host desk. Please bring water and good hiking shoes for an 8:30 a.m. departure. Registration required. No fee.
Trip #5: Tuesday, October 20 – Falls of Lana and Rattlesnake Point. South Middlebury.
Trip # 6: Tuesday, October 27 – Cantilever Rock, Mt. Mansfield.
Join Robbie Stanley for 21st Century Toys on Thursday evenings from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. Dates: Oct. 29, Nov. 5 and 12. iPods, blogs, Facebook, Twitter – what’s it all about? This hands-on class will cover iTunes and iPods in the first class, move on to the wonderful world of blogging the second week, and then finish with Facebook, Twitter and the new e-reading devices like the Kindle in the final class. Prerequisite: Should be comfortable with computers and using e-mail, Google and the Internet. Please bring a laptop to use in class, if possible. Registration required. Fee: $15/class, $40 for all three.
The Flynn Center for the Performing Arts has generously offered available tickets for its student matinee show Chasing George Washington on Tuesday, November 3, at 9:30 a.m. Against projections of real White House interiors, three multi-ethnic kids on a field trip meet our founding fathers (Lincoln, Washington), mothers (Jackie Kennedy, Dolly Madison) and children (Susan Ford and others) who bring pivotal moments to life in our nation’s history, most notably the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. Co-commissioned by the White House Historical Association and the Kennedy Center, this moving musical reminds us that it’s the children of today who inherit the choices made in the past, and no place in the nation sees more historic choices than 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue! This is a wonderful opportunity to see a show at the Flynn during the day at a fraction of the regular cost. Registration is through the Senior Center and required one week prior to the show. Fee: $8.50.
Senior Luncheons are held every Wednesday at noon. Reservations are necessary in advance and can be made by calling the Senior Center at 425-6345. A $4 donation is requested to help cover costs. Those who do not wish to share lunch with us are welcome to drop in around 1 p.m. to enjoy the After Lunch Offerings:
10/21: FLU CLINIC with Pat Wright from the Wellness Office and the VNA.
PLEASE NOTE: This clinic will begin at 1:30 p.m. The requirements for receiving a shot are: acquiring the age of +65, a Medicare/Medicaid card, and/or a long-term health issue.
10/28: ETHEL ATKINS FUDGE FEST!
How she made 450 pieces of fudge for the children of Charlotte we’ll never know, but the Senior Center would like to carry on the Ethel Atkins Halloween Fudge tradition. We will supply the ingredients (available at the host desk) for you to mix up a batch of fudge at home, and then all are welcome to come and wrap up the treats for the children.
