Charlotte Senior Center Happenings
by Mary Recchia, Activities Coordinator
February 11, 2010, page 17

SNOW DAYS! If there is ever a question whether the Senior Center is closed due to weather, know that we will follow the Charlotte Central School closing that is posted on local TV and radio stations as well as cssu.org.
Please look for the new Spring Program of activities at the Senior Center in the next issue of The Charlotte News. In the meantime, come enjoy a Monday Munch or Wednesday Luncheon with the After Luncheon programs as follows:
2/17: Great City By the Sea with David Conrad
It is said that San Francisco is seductive – and indeed it is!  Before arriving in the city itself, we will look at the Frank Lloyd Wright Civic Center, travel to Oakland and Berkeley across San Francisco Bay, and then arrive at the delightful Ferry Building downtown. From the Embarcadero we will explore some popular as well as lesser-known sites in this spectacular city where Vermont’s beloved Robert Frost was born!
2/24: A Question of Taxes with Mike Yantachka
Mike will discuss the latest developments in federal and Vermont income-tax reporting, including credits, deductions, capital gains and retirement income. Deductions that can be taken for volunteer expenses will be included. Questions welcome.  Mike is a Tax Advisor employed by H&R Block.
3/3: Vietnam Today with Tom McAuliff
Tom recently returned to Charlotte from two years of teaching in Vietnam. His slide presentation will focus on what is happening in Vietnam currently – the country’s youthful population, the Vietnamese economy and the country’s view of its future as seen through the eyes of its university students. The everyday customs of the Vietnamese as well as the challenges that the future presents will also be described.

3/10: Calling All March Madness Fans!
The Vermont Humanities Council presents a “living history” performance by Robert Cheney entitled AHA! Dr. James Naismith (creator of basketball). Robert will portray this Canadian American with a very interesting life who made profound contributions to the world. This uncommon man gave the world valuable research and inventions, including basketball (a homework assignment at Springfield College in 1891) and set a wonderful model of unpretentious, wholesome living. Come witness a remarkable personification of a remarkable man!
And for those of you planning ahead, a very special presentation by Katey Gordon entitled We Can Do Better By One Another on Tuesday morning, March 9, at 10 a.m. Katey Gordon has taught Global Environmental Policy, Green Political Theory and Environmental Ethics. She worked on Al Gore’s Climate Project as a presenter and will speak about the Climate Project and the implications of climate change for Vermont as well as bring us the latest science and information collected since September. Katey currently lives in Burlington as a business owner, freelance writer, and outdoor enthusiast and a passionately engaged citizen who believes we all have an inherent responsibility as Citizens of the Global Community to address climate change. Katey inspires action by igniting a sense of personal responsibility, hope and optimism in the hearts of the people she meets every day. This event is an open meeting of the Shelburne/Charlotte Garden Club. Light refreshments served. No fee.
