April is Full of Spring Activities
The April Art Exhibit will be paintings by Kay George. Kay started painting at age 72 when a dear friend invited her to take a drawing class. She went on to enjoy pastel-plein air painting and meeting many others with like interests. She has enjoyed many of the wonderful art offerings and classes at the Senior Center, is a Middlebury Garden Member and enjoys gardening and drying and preserving dried flowers.
The center is pleased to host the American Red Cross Blood Drive on Thursday, April 14, from 2-7 p.m. The comfortable atmosphere and great snacks make giving the “Gift of Life” at this site most pleasurable.
We will conclude our Movies in the Afternoon series with Black Narcissis on April 7 and The African Queen on April 21 from 1-3:30 p.m. The movie and popcorn are provided at no charge; beverages and candy can be purchased. No registration necessary.
Come enjoy a Spring Stroll at Thompson’s Point with Jinny McLoughlin
Wednesdays at 9:30 a.m. Dates: April 20 and May 4. Witness the wonders of spring and signs of the new life that only spring can bring. Enjoy this new season with an easy stroll at Thompson’s Point where the early wildflowers bloom. We’ll meet at the Senior Center to drive to the “Point” to enjoy a pleasant, slow walk at your own pace. We’ll see glimpses of the lake as well as the abundant wildlife and flowers. Weather dependant, registration required. No fee.
The Savvy Seniors will present humorous skits on Wednesday evening, April 20, at 7 p.m. that highlight ways to protect yourself from fraud and abuse. Focusing on Medicare and insurance scams, these volunteers from Lyric Theatre Company will help make you a savvy senior when dealing with con artists of all kinds. This program is co-sponsored by Our Lady of Mount Carmel’s Faith in Action Committee and COVE - The Community of Vermont Elders. All are welcome. No fee.
The first Spring Road Hike with Marty Morrissey is Tuesday, April 26, to Red Rocks Park. Depart: 9 a.m. Please meet at the center 10 minutes prior to departure with water, good hiking or walking shoes and a snack or lunch. Registration required. No fee.
Hike starts at parking lot off of Queen City Park Road in South Burlington. We will follow roads in a loop through the park to the lake at the far end. This area has lots of spring wildflowers. Total distance is 2 ½ to 3 ½ miles.
A new session of Pilates with Phyllis Bartling begins Thursday mornings from 8:30-9:30 a.m. Dates: 4/28, 5/5, 5/12, 5/19, 5/26 and 6/2. This is not your granddaughter’s Pilates class! This mat pilates class has been designed for folks 55 years and older to be challenging yet with safety in mind. Pilates specifically targets the core muscle groups, including the lower abdominals, lower back and gluteals, to improve balance, strength and posture. Exercises will be done on the floor on mats (a rolled up towel to put under your head is a good idea). Phyllis has been a certified Pilates instructor for three years, specifically teaching senior programs for two of those years. Registration required. Fee: $42.
Spring Splash – a Watercolor Class with Lynn Cummings begins Tuesday mornings from 9 a.m.-noon. Dates: 5/3, 5/10, 5/17, 5/24, 5/31, 6/7. Brilliant spring flowers and the greening, blooming landscapes of Vermont will be the subjects for this watercolor class. From beginning watercolor painters to those with some experience, all participants will enjoy exploring fun and interesting ways of painting colorful spring subjects in this supportive class environment. You will be encouraged to loosen up and use this wonderful, sometimes unpredictable medium to its advantage! Please pick up a materials list at the center prior to the first class. Registration required. Fee: First four classes, $96, all six, $144.
