SENIOR CENTER 10th ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION

Join us on February 2 at 7 p.m. for a celebration of our first ten years! This will be an occasion to honor those individuals who had the vision to follow through on Walter Irish’s generous gift to the town and also those who have worked to build and expand on this vision. View our February art display – a gallery of pictures from the past ten years and a video loop on the screen in the Great Room.
New sessions of Gentle and Chair Yoga begin on Monday, January 30. Please call the center for details.
Let’s Just Sing! with Carl Recchia will meet on Tuesday, January 31, from 1:30 – 3:00 p.m. in the CVU chorus room and then again on Tuesday, February 14, at the center.
We will choose familiar tunes and easily learned new pieces that will lift our spirits! Whether you have sung for years or quietly sing to yourself in the shower, choose whatever excuse you need to come join the fun. Sing yourself happy!  Registration required. No fee.
The Genealogy group will meet Thursday afternoon, February 2 at 1:00 p.m.
The Stuff that Dreams are Made of with Chessie Stevenson begins Wednesday afternoons from 2 – 3:30 p.m. Dates: 2/15, 2/22, 2/29, 3/7, 3/14, 3/21. Join Chessie in exploring what dreams are, how they work for our well-being, how to catch them since they are often hard to remember, how they sometimes predict the future and why even nightmares may be good dreams. She will demonstrate how dreams work and why it can be useful to remember them. Registration required. Fee: $72.
The Healthier Living Workshop (HLW) with Dawn Weening, RN CCM, Coordinator of Adult Outreach and Education at FAHC, begins Wednesday afternoons after the luncheon from 1 – 3:30 p.m. Dates: 2/15, 2/22, 2/29, 3/7, 3/14, 3/21. Registration required. No fee. The Healthier Living Workshop (HLW) is a program to assist people with chronic disease to develop the skills needed to effectively manage their own health. The HLW is offered to empower individuals as self-managers through education, support and skill-building exercises, notably, goal-setting and problem-solving skills. People living with diverse chronic conditions such as asthma, heart disease, lung disease and diabetes experience many of the same symptoms (fatigue, anger, frustration, depression and isolation) and are able to come together in a group to address their common experiences. The workshops are co-facilitated by leaders with chronic conditions who have been trained in a four-day program by Stanford-certified master trainers. Specific medical advice is not given.
Some of the topics covered in the free six-week, 2 ˝ hour sessions are:
Techniques to deal with problems such as frustration, fatigue, pain and isolation
Breathing techniques and guided imagery to reduce stress
Exercise for improving and maintaining strength, flexibility and endurance
Appropriate use of medications
How to talk with family, friends and health professionals
Nutrition
How to evaluate new health treatments.
Please join us for Events following the Wednesday Luncheon beginning at 1 p.m.
2/1: Machu Picchu: Beyond the Stones” with Libby and David VanBuskirk. Libby and David will show slides and tell stories about their visit to Machu Picchu when The Center for Traditional Textiles of Cusco, Peru brought Inca children from a nearby village to see and explore the great site their ancestors created. For contrast the VanBuskirks will show and tell stories about the children’s own village for a glimpse of Inca traditions still alive today.

2/8: China: an Overview of a Fascinating Country with Sheri Larsen. As a tourist destination, China has a great deal to offer – the Forbidden City, the Great Wall of China, the terra cotta warriors, ancient temples and gardens, modern cities, the mighty Yangzte River, the Three Gorges Dam, giant pandas, incredible landscapes and more.   Sheri and Rich Larsen traveled to China in May 2011 and tried to pack as much sightseeing into 21 days as possible.  Their slideshow features photos from their visits to Beijing, Shanghai, the Yangtze River, Chongquin, Xian, Guilin and Hong Kong.
