Fall Programs Have Begun

Please look for the new Fall Program of activities and events at the center as an insert in this issue of The Charlotte News. Below are a few early highlights.
This Friday, September 9, Judy Rowe is leading the fifth kayak trip of the season. Please contact her directly at judyrowe@gmavt.net to sign up for the trip and receive trip information.
The Charlotte Historical Society presents Vermont History Through Song on Wednesday, September 14, at 7 p.m. Singer and researcher Linda Radtke brings Vermont history to life with engaging commentary about the songs found in the Vermont Historical Society’s collection of sheet music. Dressed in period costume and using the music Vermonters published and sang in their communities, Ms. Radtke takes listeners through our state’s history. Refreshments are provided. No fee.
New sessions of our old favorites, Pilates, Tai Chi and Living Strong begin the week of September 12. Please call the center for specific times and details.
The first of five Fall Hikes in the Champlain Valley with Marty Morrissey is on Tuesday, September 20, to Indian Brook Reservoir with a 9 a.m. departure. This hike climbs gently to the north ridge where there are good views of the water. The group will then come down on a well-constructed trail through ledges back to the starting point. The route is approximately three miles. A full description of each trip and the degree of difficulty is available at the host desk. Please bring water, food and good hiking or walking shoes for departure from the Senior Center. Registration required. No fee.
A new session of Zumba Gold - The Fun Workout for Anyone, Any Age, Any Ability with Jeanne Neu begins Friday mornings from 9:15 – 10 a.m. Dates: 9/23, 9/30, 10/7, 10/14, 10/21 and 10/28. Zumba Gold was designed for the older active adult and utilizes the same great Latin styles of music and dance used in the Zumba basic program. It’s just as much fun, just not as fast. This easy-to-follow program allows anyone, any age, to be able to perform the Zumba Gold dance moves, so that success can be achieved quickly. Some of the featured dances are salsa, cha-cha, cumbia, rock ‘n roll and merengue, along with the twist, the Charleston, belly dancing, flamenco and tango. The Zumba® Gold program strives to improve balance, strength, flexibility and, most importantly, the heart. Be sure to wear comfortable workout clothing, bring water and a towel as well as a “ready to party” attitude! Registration required. Fee: $42
Fun For Fall – a Watercolor Class with Lynn Cummings begins on Tuesday mornings from 9 a.m. - noon. Dates: 9/27, 10/4, 10/11, 10/18 and 10/25. This fall we’ll explore color mixing and painting with unusual objects and materials to produce loose, colorful fall-themed watercolor paintings. Get ready to have fun and try some techniques you may not have explored before. Please get the materials list at the host desk prior to class, as it has been revised. Beginners and intermediates welcome. Registration required. Fee: $96.
Come try Chair Yoga with Tiny Sikkes Monday mornings at 9:30 a.m. Chair yoga is a form of yoga designed to benefit anyone with physical limitations by enhancing their mobility, balance and peace of mind. Fifteen years ago, after practicing for many years, Tiny decided to become a yoga teacher and share the benefits she experienced. Yoga taught her to relax, strengthen and be aware of her body and to accept its limitations. It helped clear her mind and cope with stress. Her class at the Senior Center, now in its fourth year, meets one hour per week. A chair is used for seated and standing poses, breathing exercises are included, and class finishes with a deep relaxation. It is wonderful for her to hear how important the classes become to her students, a highlight of the week. Come give it a try.
The Sixth Annual Senior Center Art Show – Faces, Flowers and Faraway Places – will continue to grace the walls of the Great Room at the center through the month of September, with representation from area artists ages 50+ of all “mastery” levels.
Please note that the Monday Munch crews will be taking the month of September to regroup and dream up some new and interesting dishes for the fall. The café closed on Mondays beginning August 29, but we look forward to seeing you all again on October 3. Our glorious Senior Luncheons will still be held every Wednesday at noon. Reservations are necessary in advance and can be made by calling the Senior Center at 425-6345. Suggested donation: $4.
Events following the Wednesday Luncheon begin at approximately 1 p.m.:
9/14: The Stuff That Dreams Are Made of with Chessie Stevenson “…to sleep, perchance to dream…” Hamlet.
Join Chessie in exploring what dreams are, how they work for our well-being, how to catch them since they are often hard to remember, how they sometimes predict the future, and why even nightmares may be good dreams. She will demonstrate how they work and why it can be useful to remember them.
9/21: Afternoon Bocce with Bill Roberts
Enjoy an afternoon of the popular Italian game, bocce. We will car pool from the center through the early fall colors to a private court in Starksboro, which is surrounded by a splendid arbor, comfortable benches and a beautiful trout pond. No experience or special skills are required, and instruction will be provided. Registration is required. Limit: 16. Weather dependent.

The Café Menu

WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 14
BBQ chicken, potato salad, 3-bean salad, birthday cake and ice cream

WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 21
Enchilada casserole, black bean and corn salad, Mexican brownies

NOTE: The Monday lunch teams are on vacation between now and October when they would welcome more volunteers. See information below.

Senior Luncheons are held every Wednesday at noon. Reservations are necessary in advance and can be made by calling the Senior Center at 425-6345. A $4 donation is requested. Reservations are not required for the Monday Munch.

Call for Monday Volunteers

Tim McCullough, who coordinates the Monday Munches, is looking for new folks to join the teams. The cooks take turns preparing the soups, salads and desserts that make up the Monday lunch, and non-cooks help with preparation and serving. The commitment is for just one morning a month, and you don’t even have to wash the dishes! To learn more, contact Tim directly at 318-1364 or e-mail cubnut5@aol.com; or call Mary Recchia at the Senior Center, 425-6345.
