Charlotte Senior Center

July 14, 2011, pg 7-A....

While many programs at the center are full to overflowing this summer, there are still a few spots open in the activities highlighted below as well as many daily offerings that do not require registration. Please stop by, pick up a program and check out the possibilities!
Let’s Ride! with Sojourn Bicycling on Tuesday morning July 19, beginning from the center at 9 a.m. Destination: Essex, New York. Get outdoors, meet some folks, and enjoy yourself with Charlotte-based Sojourn for this fun, supported, recreational ride. Snacks and refreshments will be provided along with the support van. Registration required. No fee, with the exception of the $7.25 round-trip fee for the ferry. If you would like to come along but don’t have a bike, let us know; for $15 Sojourn will provide you with a properly sized bicycle.
Join Jinny McLoughlin for a lovely Summer Stroll on Wednesday, July 20, to Shelburne Bay Access. We will leave from the center at 9 a.m. There are several walks to choose from, depending on the lake level, interest and ability. We will be back by lunchtime. Registration required. No fee.
The outcome of the paddlers’ gathering in June was the scheduling of several Kayak Trips for this summer. The first trip went to Bristol Pond/Winona Lake with Elsbeth Mode and Rosemarie Conn as the leaders. The second trip is scheduled for July 22 with Helen Douglas (862-7722, bikehelen@sbcglobal.net) and Jean Anderson (657-3540, jeanoutdoors@aol.com) leading the trip on Lake Iroquois. The third trip will be on August 12 to Little Otter Creek/Kingsland Bay with Laura Cahners-Ford (lcford@gmavt.net) and Susan Hyde (susanfosterhyde@gmail.com). Please contact the leaders directly to sign up for the trip and receive trip information.
New sessions of Yoga, Chair Yoga and Pilates begin at the end of this month. Please contact the center for specific day and times. We have also added another Tai Chi session with David McNally on Thursdays from 10-11 a.m. Dates: 8/4, 8/11, 8/18, 9/1 and 9/8. Endorsed by the Arthritis Foundation, the short form (12 movements) of Sun style Tai Chi is easy to learn and designed to improve balance, flexibility, stability and overall health. David has studied Chinese Kung Fu and Tai Chi since 1985 and trained in Tai Chi for Arthritis as developed by Dr. Paul Lam. Registration required. Fee: $35.
An AARP Driver Safety Class with Jim Inglis, AARP Volunteer Instructor, will be held on Tuesday, August 2, from 8:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. A classroom refresher course for drivers aged 50 and over, this highly effective Defensive Driving Course (which may enable you to receive an auto insurance discount) covers important issues that affect older drivers, such as physical changes and limitations, normal driving situations and environmental conditions, safe driving and vehicle information, and the effects of medication on the motorist. The course provides drivers the opportunity to fine tune driving skills and become safer and better drivers. Upon completion of the course, you will receive a certificate valid for three years, a course workbook, and other instructional material. The course is now taught in one half-day session. Class limit: 25. Registration required. Fee: $14 ($12 for AARP members), payable to AARP.
On Wednesday, August 10, at 7 p.m. The Charlotte Historical Society will present “The Legacy of Ardelia Beach.” Bob Beach (Robert, Jr.) will discuss the farming and outdoor origins of the Basin Harbor resort now in its fifth generation of ownership. Refreshments will be provided after the program. All are welcome.
Faces, Flowers and Far Away Places is the title of our Sixth Annual Celebration of Art, the September Art Exhibit at the center. This exhibit is a non-juried show open to artists ages 50+ of all “mastery” levels. Registration forms with specific details are available at the host desk with a deadline of August 12.
