Charlotte Senior Center
Charlotte Senior Center
by Mary Recchia, Activities Coordinator
July 1, 2010, pg 13

Just a reminder that the Center will be closed on Monday, July 5.

On Tuesday, July 6, at 10 a.m., you are invited to participate in a discussion here at the Center with Lt. Governor Brian Dubie, who chairs the Governor’s Commission on Healthy Aging. He is visiting different senior centers to elicit feedback on the 12 recommendations set forth in a report to Governor Douglas on how to promote healthy aging for seniors. The report (posted on the bulletin board in the foyer) highlights high-priority healthy aging issues and makes recommendations for furthering healthy aging goals in Vermont with particular attention to the promotion of evidence-based programs. Come join the conversation.

Don’t forget to call in your steps for the Route 1 Walking Program! All teams are progressing nicely down the coast of Maine, setting their sights on New York City by the Fourth of July!

Walking Buddies complements our annual summer walking program. Organized walks will be held every Wednesday morning at 9:30 a.m., before the luncheon. The sites are planned so that you can do a short, medium or long walk with the short walks being fairly flat. We will walk East Charlotte Horse Country on July 7 and Shelburne Bay on July 14. Please sign up at the host desk. No fee.

The French Conversation Group continues on Wednesday mornings from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Challenge your brain, practice your conversational French and have fun. All levels welcome. No fee.

Charlotte’s Town Party takes place on Saturday, July 10, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Stop by the Senior Center to see the art exhibit, tour our facilities and, of course, the coffee is always on!

For the month of July, please come and enjoy the art of Marion Guild. She will display pencil drawings that demonstrate her superb skills in draftsmanship as well as her fine sense of humor. You are invited to come to a reception on Sunday, July 11, at 1 p.m. where you can meet Marion and talk about her work.

The Charlotte Historical Society presents “Sprightly Steps: Vermont’s Contra and Square Dancing Tradition,” by Adam Boyce on Sunday, July 18, at 3 p.m. The program is co-sponsored with the Chittenden Historical Society, which will have its annual meeting at 2 p.m. All are welcome at 3 p.m. with refreshments that will include an ice cream social – Ben & Jerry’s for sure!

An AARP Driver Safety Class with Jim Inglis, AARP Volunteer Instructor, will be held on Tuesday, August 3, from 8:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. A classroom refresher course for drivers aged 50 and over, this highly effective defensive driving course (which may enable you to receive an auto insurance discount) covers important issues that affect older drivers, such as physical changes and limitations, normal driving situations and environmental conditions, safe driving and vehicle information, and the effects of medication on the motorist. The course provides drivers the opportunity to fine tune driving skills and become a safer and better driver. Upon completion of the course, you will receive a certificate valid for three years, a course workbook and other instructional material. The course is now taught in one half-day session. Registration required. Class limit: 25. Fee: $14 ($12 for AARP members) payable to AARP.
