Charlotte Park and Wildlife Refuge: What a Beautiful Place to Ride
Charlotte Park and Wildlife Refuge: What a Beautiful Place to Ride
by Jenny Cole,
September 9, 2010.....

Selectboard member Jenny Cole is the board’s liaison to the Park Oversight Committee. She provided the following information about riding in the park.

Horseback riding is allowed on the gravel and grassed trails in the upper part of the Charlotte Park and Wildlife Refuge. Riding is not allowed on the lower trails from the Greenbush Road parking area to the middle of the park, or in the woods west of the “overlook.” These trails cross wet areas with bog bridges and streams with bridges that are constructed for foot travel only.
Riders have been using the riding trails by entering the park at unofficial access points. Creating a parking area on Route 7 for horse trailers and access for other limited uses has been under discussion for several years. The opportunity for access and parking at the Varney Farm was provided for in the sale of the farm to Clark Hinsdale, Jr.
There have been more horses in the park this year, so it may become necessary to establish some rules (for example, staying on trails in the early spring when the ground is wet and soft). It also would be good to have equestrian representation on the Park Oversight Committee.
