CCS was crowded with grandparents and special friends on Friday’s annual Grandparents Day. The first hour was spent in the classrooms, sharing the pledge of allegiance and other morning activities. Then the entire school moved into the multi-purpose room for the final concert of the year, which for the 8th-grade students was their final concert at CCS. With vocal and choral director Allyson Ledoux directing, a group of 5th-grade boys opened with the Vermont state song, “These Green Hills,” and then the 7th-8th-grade Concert Choir pleased the crowd with several songs, including a jazz version of “My Favorite Things.” Andy Smith, the new instrumental director, led the Stage Band through an exhilarating set, including “Perdido,” “Afro Blue,” “Theme from Peter Gunn” and “25 or 6 to 4.”
After the concert Andy Smith sat down at the piano with Lucy and Ted Pease, grandparents of Rachel and Jenna Baginski. The Peases, who have a summer camp at Cedar Beach, are both retired music teachers. They came from their home in Natick, Massachusetts, to hear Rachel, an 8th grader, sing in the chorus and play flute in the band, and Jenna, a 5th grader, sing in a concert the night before.
The Stage Band is scheduled to play during the Burlington Discover Jazz Festival on the Church Street Marketplace in front of City Hall on Tuesday, June 8, from 1:45-2:45 p.m. Director Andy Smith is also performing during the festival, playing bass on five different days, including with Jenni Johnson & The Jazz Junketeers on Friday, June 4, at 8 p.m. at Leunig’s and with the Bob Levinson Trio at One Half Lounge on Saturday, June 5, at 5 p.m.
