The recently negotiated teacher’s contract, which increases salaries by 3% rather than the 2% budgeted, requires a reduction of $23,900 from the FY2012 budget at the Charlotte Central School. The Charlotte News asked the administration for information that might be helpful to parents concerned about the changes this might mean in their children’s teachers.
Co-principals Greg Marino and Audrey Boutaugh said that work is underway to address the funds necessary to offset the additional monies required. They explained, “Given the overage will occur in the category of “Instructional,” and a significant portion of the school’s overall budget is in salaries and benefits, the focus begins in this area. We are in the process of finalizing contracts, dealing with known RIFS (reductions in force), receiving notification of retirements, and helping employees designate benefit elections for the coming year. Changes in all of these areas combined could provide the savings to meet the challenge amount. Additionally, as hiring decisions are made between now and the start of the school year, administrators will take into account the progress made towards meeting the shortfall.”
They added, “With regard to staffing for the coming school year, there are numerous factors that will impact this area, many of which are still to be determined. We are still in the process of finalizing contracts, dealing with known RIFS, and receiving notification of retirements. Given that all of these areas can impact the staff assignments for next year, it is premature for us to make staffing determinations at this time. It is our plan to determine the best possible staff assignments to satisfy all contractual requirements and support success for the students of CCS.  We expect these assignments to be determined by June1st.”
The next regularly scheduled meeting of the CCS School Board is Tuesday, April 26, at 6:30 p.m. in the Library.
