to Mariana and Peter DuBrul on the birth of their son Robin Peter DuBrul July 3 at Fletcher Allen Health Care, Burlington.
to Jesse and Rachel (Krasnow) McEntee on the birth of their son Levi James McEntee on June 4.
to John Lunde, M.D., associate professor of pathology and medicine at the University of Vermont College of Medicine, who received the Buttles Professorship in Pathology for 2009 through 2014. The position was established in 1984 to recognize the work of Hiram Buttles, who served as chair of pathology and bacteriology from 1921 to 1946. Dr. Lunde earned his undergraduate and medical degrees from UVM and joined the faculty in 1987. He, his wife, Karyn, and son Gus live in Charlotte.
to Emily Harcourt, who earned a bachelor of arts degree summa cum laude from Mount Holyoke College, South Hadley, Massachusetts. The daughter of Jennifer Chiodo and David Harcourt of Charlotte, Emily graduated from Champlain Valley Union High School before attending Mount Holyoke, where she majored in biochemistry.
to Elizabeth Harris, who earned a master of science degree in journalism from Columbia University in New York City. Elizabeth was one of ten fellows in the Knight-Bagehot Fellowship Program. She is the daughter of Everett and Kathleen McKinley of Charlotte. Elizabeth has received a travel grant to conduct interviews and write articles from Japan.
to Rooney Castle and Tara Hetz, students at St. Lawrence University, Canton, New York, who earned placement on the school’s Dean’s List for the spring semester, 2009. Castle graduated in June after having completed a major in psychology. He participated in Psi Chi and men’s club hockey at St Lawrence. Hetz will enter her senior year in the fall carrying a major in conservation biology. She has been active in Amnesty International, Lettuce Turnip the Beet and crew, while in college.
to Alexander Bown, a rising junior at Marist College, Poughkeepsie, New York, who earned placement on the school’s Dean’s List for the spring semester, 2009. Bown is majoring in business administration with an emphasis in finance.
to Jack Jessett, a recent graduate of Champlain Valley Union High School, who was one of 13 high school seniors in Vermont to receive $1,000 scholarships from the Comcast Foundation. The Leaders and Achievers Scholarship Program recognizes those who have demonstrated leadership, have achieved academically, and who have shown to be committed to community service. Jessett will enter Marist College to study computer information systems.
to Father David Cray, who received his 17-gallon pin from the American Red Cross Blood Services, New England region.
to Charlotte Central School mathematics teacher Christa Duthie-Fox, who was one of a group of teachers nationwide to receive the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. Winners receive $10,000 from the National Science Foundation to use at their discretion.
to Anders Holm, M.D. who was featured in the San Francisco Chronicle on July 16 for his work with solar power in Middlebury. Holm’s father had purchased an old brick mill on the Otter Creek and turned it into commercial space in the 1980s. Holms and his brother, convinced of the advisability of reducing reliance on foreign oil, restored both the mill and the hydropower. The article says that the owners of an old abandoned hydroelectric site in a former grist mill across the river from Holm’s have contacted him and asked for guidance in reviving their “languishing system.” The article is entitled “US Looks to Rediscover Hydropower as Untapped Energy Source.”
to Michael Bull and Rolf Sennhenn for the successful crossing of the Atlantic Ocean in Michael’s sailboat, Ekaterina, a 38-foot Sabre. They were joined by a colleague of Michael’s, Mike Saunders. According to Rolf’s wife, Carolyn, they set sail from South Freeport Maine on June 23 and arrived in Cork, Ireland, on July 19. During the trip they encountered challenging storms, winds higher than 40 knots and at least one knockdown.
to Thomas Naylor, Charlotte-based guru of the Second Vermont Republic, a secessionist movement for New England which was called “one of the most vibrant” in a June 13 Wall Street Journal article. The author, Paul Starobin, cites Vermont as one of the country’s most “politically-liberal places.”
to Meg Smith, chair of the Intervale Center Board, who was featured in a July 13 Burlington Free Press article in the Business Monday section. The article noted that Chittenden Bank had recently signed on as one of the Intervale Center’s “Business Partners for a Local Food Economy,” and donated $5,000 toward the center’s efforts to support local farmers, build a sustainable food system and steward land in Burlington’s Intervale.

is extended to family and friends of Peter Schofield of Middlebury, who died July 7 at the age of 71. His immediate surviving family includes Sandy, Carolyn, Jamie, Jonathan, Julia, Nathalie and Zainab Schofield. They ask that in lieu of flowers, those wishing to recognize him make memorial donations to the New England chapter of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
is extended to family and friends of Professor Emeritus Jean-Guy Beliveau of Charlotte who passed away July 17 at the age of 62. Born in Arthabaska, Quebec, Dr. Beliveau obtained a bachelors degree in engineering from the University of Vermont and earned a doctorate in civil engineering from Princeton University. He accepted a position in UVM’s college of engineering in 1985 and later served as chair of the department. He was named a fellow by the American Society of Civil Engineers and served as Vermont Section president and later Vermont State Coordinator for MATHCOUNTS, a nationwide middle school mathematics competition. His surviving family includes his wife, Connie, and four daughters. They ask that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to a scholarship fund to be formed in his name for entering engineering students at UVM or to the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation or to the Vermont Respite House, 99 Allen Brook Lane, Williston, Vermont 05495.
is extended to family and friends of Grace M. Cole of Charlotte, who passed away July 18 at the age of 89. Born in Saxton’s River, she grew up in Huntington and moved to Charlotte in the 1940s. She worked for several families here and at the St. Joseph Home in Burlington. She was a member of the Charlotte Grange and Eastern Star. Her surviving family includes her son, Douglas Cole, of Charlotte and his partner, Nora Wright, of Ferrisburgh.
