to Curt McMullen, professor at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, who appeared in a book recently published entitled Mathematicians, an Outer View of the Inner World. The book features pieces on the “most impressive mathematicians of our time.” McMullen attended Charlotte Central School, graduating from Champlain Valley Union High School. His mother, Patty McMullen, lives in Charlotte.
to Rex Forehand, who was recognized as a “University Distinguished Professor of Psychology” by the University of Vermont. The title is given to faculty members who have made outstanding contributions to the advancement of knowledge in their disciplines. Forehand is a leading world authority in child and family psychology with over 400 published scholarly works.
to Martin Gawron, John Martenis and Katie Smith whose academic achievements have earned them placement on the Dean’s List at Vermont Technical College for the spring semester, 2009.
to Rooney Castle who was among 494 students to earn degrees at St. Lawrence University, Canton, New York, May 17. A graduate of Champlain Valley Union High School, Rooney received a B.A. in psychology (cum laude) from St. Lawrence.
to Tai Dinnan who graduated summa cum laude from Tufts University, Medford, Massachusetts. Dinnan earned a bachelor of arts degree with a double major in community health and child development. She was awarded a Stern Scholarship, the Alpha Xi Delta Prize Scholarship and was inducted into the Honos Civicus Society by the Tisch College of Citizenship and Public Service. The daughter of Terry Dinnan and Marty Illick, Tai currently manages the Somerville schools’ urban gardening program.
to Luc David Delaney, USN, who was promoted to the rank of lieutenant commander on June 1. The son of Sharron and Dennis Delaney of Charlotte, Luc is a graduate of the United States Naval Academy.
to Alix McKenna Reynolds who earned a bachelor of arts degree from Fairfield University with a major in Communication-Organizational.
to Jeannette Delorge who graduated from Trinity Baptist High School in Williston on June 6. Jenni was inducted into the American Christian Honor Society and was presented with the DAR Good Citizenship Award, the Kings Character and Leadership Award, the Principal’s Award, and with the President’s Award for Educational Excellence. The daughter of Ken and Claudette Delorge, she plans to attend Northland Baptist Bible College in Dunbar, Wisconsin, in the fall.
to the Charlotte Central Stage Band and the CVU Jazz Band whose pictures and feature articles filled half of the June 3 Burlington Free Press “Hometown” section.
to Champlain Valley Union High School and to Seventh Generation, two organizations with ties to Charlotte who were named “Commuter Challenge” winners. CVU gained third place in the 2009 School Challenge Awards. Seventh Generation won recognition for the top medium sized business in the 2009 Business Awards. The awards were made to groups who participated in this year’s “Way to Go! Commuter Challenge” and reduced their transportation pollution for a week. Their participation saved 206,000 pounds of carbon emissions among other things.
to the family and friends of Tyler Palmer. On May 31, Pentecost Sunday, the congregation of the North Ferrisburgh United Methodist Church dedicated the church’s new front doors in his memory. Tyler graduated from Rice memorial High School in 1988 before earning a degree in engineering. He was active in Engineers without Borders and founded a San Francisco engineering firm that focused on “green” solutions. The son of Roberta “Chick” Wood of Charlotte, he died in a skiing accident in January 2008.

Her surviving family includes her daughter, Cindy Mackin, now of South Burlington but a Charlotte resident for many years, and Cindy’s sons Seamus Bhatt-Mackin and Padraic Mackin.
