Congratulations & Sympathy

CONGRATULATIONS

to Johanna Aube and Mike Ingalis on the birth of their daughter, Lena Grace Ingalis, on January 17 at Fletcher Allen Health Care, Burlington.

to Aaron and Sarah Flinn on the birth of their son, Atticus Flash Flinn, on January 17. His grandmother Nancy Flinn formerly lived in Charlotte before moving to Washington, D.C.

to Carolyn Woodruff, a sophomore at Champlain Valley Union High School, whose poem entitled “Sorry” was selected for publication in the Burlington Free Press’ “Young Writers Project” on February 9. The week’s theme was Aliens, Mistakes and General. After listing her “sorries,” Carolyn says her pockets are too full and she can’t carry them all. She will deposit them one by one into the “cool blue sea. Sorry, sorry, sorry goodbye.” Her poem was one of over 300 submitted by students throughout the state.

to Sadie Holmes, a music student of Norine Grant, who participated in the first annual International Collaborative Day of Music at the University Mall in South Burlington. Twelve music teachers brought 151 of their students to play in the three-day event that raised funds for Camp Ta-Kum-Ta through a theme of “kids helping kids.” The musicians raised over $7,000.

to Will Burhans, Bob Chutter and Don Schultz of the Charlotte Congregational Church and Dave Marshall of Civil Engineering Associates who were recognized for their efforts in promoting affordable housing for deserving families through work on Charlotte’s project for Green Mountain Habitat for Humanity. GMHFH Executive Director David Mullin made the presentations at the group’s annual meeting.

to the following students from Charlotte Central School who competed in this year’s Math Counts competition: Competing as a team were eighth graders Katie Bedell and Maddie Turnau and seventh graders Catherine Cazayoux and Sadie Otley. Competing as individuals were eighth graders Audrey Allegretta and seventh graders Laurel Jaunich, Tatum Braun, Hayden Kjelleren and Lilly Oates.

to the students who competed in the Charlotte Central School’s spelling bee in mid-February. Sixth grader Abigail Postlewaite repeated as the winner after being challenged through five rounds by fourth grader Elizabeth Spicer. Hannah Postlewaite placed third, Mathew Silverman fourth. There was a tie for fifth place between Evan Beal and Riley Marchand. Erik Abele followed in sixth with Sadie Holmes, William Berkowitz, Gus Lunde, Peter Hyams, Lexie Pughe and Andrew Silverman tied for seventh. Chloe Silverman and Reed Dousevicz tied for eighth.

to Kari Rehkugler, a member of the Festival Chorus at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), Worcester, Massachusetts, which was featured on a Paul Winter Consort CD nominated for “Best New Age Album” at this year’s Grammy Awards. The students sing on a track entitled “Remembering,” part of Winter’s latest album, Miho: Journey to the Mountain. WPI’s relationship with Winter dates back 10 years when the chorus and Consort performed together during the Feast of Saint Francis at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City.

to Xander Naylor, an alumnus of the New School in New York City and guitarist, who performed with Samir Chatterjee & the Chandayan World Percussion Ensemble at the New School’s Jazz Rhythm Crossroads February 15. Chatterjee’s ensemble catalyzes the fusion of Indian and Western music.

to Charlie Proutt, Tricia King and Sarah Stradtner of Distinctive Landscaping in Charlotte who were recognized recently by Green Works/Vermont Nursery and Landscape Association as one of the recipients in its Industrial Award Program for 2010. Distinctive Landscaping was one of three companies to receive the “Exceeds Excellence” award. The awards will be on display at the 2010 Vermont Flower Show, March 4 through 6 at the Champlain Valley Exposition, Essex Junction.

to Country Home Products of Vergennes and Winooski, featured in the February 16 Seven Days as a company in Vermont left standing after a decade that has seen 180 manufacturing companies disappear along with 15,000 jobs. According to the article, Country Home Products has a Charlotte history tracing back to the 1960s when DR co-founder Lyman Wood developed the Troy-Built rototiller for his company, Garden Way. DR Power Equipment is now one of three product lines within Country Home Products.

to AllEarth Renewables, Inc., a manufacturer and installer of grid-connected wind and solar systems that was cited in the February Champlain Business Journal as Vermont’s fastest growing company in 2010 and in Seven Days as another thriving manufacturer moving into 2011. Its five-year sales increased from $0.2 million in 2005 to $10.7 million in 2010, and the company is on track to complete 1,000 solar installations in 2011. According to the Seven Days’ article, this includes the largest solar array in Vermont, a 2.2 megawatt sun farm in South Burlington. Charlotte’s David Blittersdorf is CEO and founder of AllEarth Renewables.

to the following blood donors who received their gallon pins from the American Red Cross Blood Services, New England Region: Bruce Hasse, 74 gallons; Cheryl Tuigere, 2 gallons.

to Tom and Lori Delia whose Burlington restaurant, Trattoria Delia, was featured in the February 13 Burlington Free Press as an excellent stop for romantics around Valentine’s Day. Front house manager Jeremy Venditto said there are marriage proposals in the restaurant every Valentine’s Day – one table near the fireplace, he says, is “batting 1,000,” with 10 proposals, 10 yeses.

SYMPATHY

is extended to family and friends of Catherine Hunt Ferree of Charlotte who passed away after an extended battle with cancer.
