Congratulations

to Amanda Gellis and Krestal Grevatt, Charlotte Central School 8th grade students who earned High Honors during the second semester 2010. Their names were missing from the CCS Honor Roll in the last issue of The Charlotte News.

to Margaret Campbell Dunsmore and Jesse French, 2010 Champlain Valley Union High School graduates from Charlotte who have been selected by the Vermont Alliance for Arts Education to receive $500 scholarships for their artistic achievements. Campbell will enter New York University this fall, and Jesse will attend Hampshire College in Amherst, Massachusetts. Dunsmore won in the drama category, “impressing the judges with dramatic talent and maturity.” French won the music category, “playing the electric guitar and singing cover tunes and original compositions.” Another Charlotter who serves as co-chair of VAAE, Walter Judge, was pleased to make the announcement, saying they had an “outstanding pool of applicants this year.”

to Lianna Netherwood-Schwesig, a student at Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) in Rochester, New York, who earned placement on the Dean’s List for the spring quarter 2010. The daughter of Tica Netherwood and Claude Schwesig of Charlotte, Lianna graduated from CVU and is studying fine arts and photography at RIT.

to Stephen Mann, a student at Roger Williams University in Bristol, Rhode Island, who earned placement on the Dean’s List for the spring 2010 semester.

to Emma Broderick, a 12th grade student at Phillips Exeter Academy in Exeter, New Hampshire, who earned Highest Honors for the spring term 2010. She is the daughter of Amy Fitzgerald and Andrew Broderick of Charlotte.

to William Curtis, a business administration major at Castleton State College, Castleton, Vermont, who earned placement on the college’s Dean’s List for the spring semester 2010. William is the son of Raymond and Eileen Curtis of Charlotte.

to Virginia Farley, a student at Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, who earned placement on the Dean’s List for the spring semester 2010. Virginia is the daughter of Kevin and Dana Farley of Charlotte.

to Jeffrey Hollender, co-founder of Seventh Generation, a maker of non-toxic household products, who was featured through an interview in the July 7 Seven Days for his promotion of corporate social responsibility. He and his editorial director, Bill Breen, have recently published a book entitled The Responsibility Revolution: How the Next Generation of Businesses Will Win. In it, he describes and calls for what it means to be a business, saying one of the difficulties people face in discussions of social responsibility is that “no one has ever defined what it takes to be socially responsible.

is extended to family and friends of Virginia King Sprague of Burlington who passed away July 1 at the age of 81. Her surviving family includes her daughter and son-in–law, Mary Ellen and James Hebert of Charlotte and their children Molly and Daniel. The family asks that those wishing to make donations in her memory do so to the Alzheimer’s Association or to a charity of their choice.

is extended to family and friends of David Marshall Fredenburg of Columbia, Maryland, who passed away May 30. An avid skier, he and his wife, Audrey, retired to Charlotte after living in Colorado, California, Michigan and Illinois.

is extended to family and friends of Kay Hubbard of Shelburne who passed away July 8 at Fletcher Allen Health Care. Her surviving family includes her daughter Deborah Minkler and Deborah’s husband Lee, their children Sarah and Marissa, all of Charlotte. The family asks that those wishing to honor her memory through donations do so to the Kay Hubbard Memorial Education Fund, Attention: Nia, c/o Shelburne Farms, Shelburne, Vermont 05482.

is extended to family and friends of Marie Butterfield of Whiting who passed away July 9 at the age of 80. Her surviving family includes her daughter Anne Castle and Anne’s husband, Ted, as well as her grandsons Ned and Rooney Castle. The family suggests that memorial donations be made to the Addison County Humane Society, 236 Broadman Street, Middlebury, Vermont 05753 or to Special Olympics of Vermont, 368 Avenue D, Suite 30, Williston, Vermont 05495.
