Congratulations & Sympathy
Compiled by Edd Merritt
April 22, 2010, page 23.....

Congratulations...

to Emma Broderick, a senior at Philips Exeter Academy, Exeter, New Hampshire, who achieved highest honors for the Winter 2010 term. Emma is the daughter of Andrew Broderick and Amy Fitzgerald of Charlotte.

to Tara Hetz and Casey O’Brien, students at St. Lawrence University, Canton, New York, who made the dean’s list for their academic achievements during the past semester.

to Joey Carrara, one of 14 students from Vermont Commons School who represented their classmates in a Model United Nations held at Dartmouth College recently. They spent more than 13 hours in committee sessions where they “argued, debated, and wrote resolutions” on major issues facing the global community. More than 300 students from around the country participated in this fifth annual event.

to another Vermont Commons School student from Charlotte, Genni Patane, who participated in the University of Vermont’s engineering contest held at the Vermont Air National Guard. She and her partner built a “passive helicopter” complete with taffy blades.

to David Pill and his architectural firm, Pill-Marahan Associates, who earned a 2009 High Performance Building Award citation from the Sustainable Buildings Industry Council (SBIC). The project, called the “Charlotte House,” was among 40 entries from across the country. The awards were based on design objectives that define high-performance building: things such as sustainability, accessibility, aesthetics, cost-effectiveness, functionality, productivity, health, historic sensitivity, safety and security. Pill was also invited by Senator Bernie Sanders to sit on a round-table discussion of geo-thermal energy and its potential for moving Vermont toward a more sustainable, cleaner, and energy-independent future.

to William Hodgson-Walker, a seventh-grade student at Charlotte Central School, who won the 2010 Vermont Geographic Bee. (See page 6.)

to Gina Berk who was recognized by the Humane Society of Chittenden County for her “tireless support of – and unwavering dedication to – the prevention of animal suffering in our community.” Gina was a past president of the board of the Chittenden County Humane Society, and she wrote the Camp Paw Paw curricula.

to Chuck DesLauriers, President of DesLauriers and Companies, who was recently elected chairman of the New England Federal Credit Union.

to Jim and Susan Fitzpatrick, president and vice-president of SchoolSpring, a nine-year-old online educational employment source. Their company and its work were featured in the April 2010 issue of the Vermont Business Journal. Jim was principal of Champlain Valley Union High School where he established the first distance-learning program in the northeast. Susan was director of the enrichment program at Charlotte Central School for 11 years, initiating a number of programs for gifted students.
