And the Winner of the Fairy House Raffle Is...

Sale of tickets for the Fairy House raffle ended on December 23, and the lucky winner was Barbara Nedd of Shelburne, who is the new baker at the Old Brick Store. The Fairy House will remain for awhile longer in the monument garden at the intersection of Ferry and Greenbush Roads, where it has been since the beginning of last December. Over $2,065 was raised through the raffle to benefit the Committee on Temporary Shelter (COTS), which provides housing and other services for homeless individuals and families in Burlington. Denise Danyow, Director of Operations at COTS, drew the winning ticket.
Danyow said it was amazing how much money was raised. The $2,065 will help support one or two families with rent or security deposits for housing. She said that the focus of COTS has been on shelter, and that the organization is increasing resources for prevention. Homelessness can be averted by helping people stay in their existing housing.
Keeping a close eye on the drawing were Olivia and Greta Hagios, who were the lucky recipients of the bark-covered box that had been packed with raffle tickets. They live across the street from where the Fairy House was built and said they were the first ones in Charlotte to see it.
Alexandra Lehmann had the idea for the raffle and for the conception and design of the Fairy House. Construction was expertly done by Ted Roberts. Peter Rosenfeld supplied battery-powered LED lighting for the house’s interior. Matt Donahue loaned power tools and helped move the house to its new location. Lehman sends thanks to Gary and Donna Pittman, who each year allow her to cut piles of balsam boughs that cover the ground and the sleeping bulbs below.
Raffle tickets were available for $5 at the Old Brick Store, which is adjacent to the monument. Delivery of the house to Barbara will be made in late January, depending on how deep the snow is.
