58% Increase in the Use of Reusable Bags
58% Increase in the Use of Reusable Bags
Letter from Kyle Lavery,
January 13, 2011, page 3.....

It’s been a year since we (Shelburne Supermarket) stopped providing plastic shopping bags, in hopes that it would promote the use of reusable bags instead. Well, here are the statistics:
In 2009, we gave out bag refunds for 61,723 reusable shopping bags. In 2010, that number soared to 97,693! An increase of 35,970 bags, or roughly 58 percent!! We’re a little proud of that number, but the real thanks go to you, the customers. We all thank you very much for your enthusiastic support of this initiative. Almost a hundred thousand bags not wasted. That’s pretty darn good for our little store.
At the rate bag refunds are increasing, it’s likely that 2011 will be even more impressive. Again, thank you all!

Kyle Lavery
Assistant Office Manager,
Shelburne Supermarket
